Review of Dark Oak
The finished product is amazing. Though darker than I would have thought for an oak slab, the finish covers well and preserves the wood nicely. Highly recommended for the novice or professional.

*Although Pure and Natural may appear to be clear finishes, neither truly are. Natural contains a white/yellow pigment and Pure contains no pigment, but still has a naturally occurring color. Because Oil Plus 2C is a linseed oil based product, it will naturally enrich and thereby darken any wood it's applied to (all oil based products will do this).

This was my first time using Monocoat. I looked for a long time to find what I felt would be the best product. This is it! It was easy to apply and gave me the EXACT look I wanted. The family will be using this on the family house in NH that has the original wood floors.
We really like how this came out on our counter top, which was made specifically to highlight all the colors of the hard wood used. It went on easily, dried nicely, but its a bit yellow (not clear) and it dried unevenly.
I’m a contractor but it’s the First time using the product on my own bedroom floor just to test it before I introduce it in the field.
It worked just as advertised. I used the chocolate color and it looks amazing. A small learning curve with any product is expected. No Voc is great as we could stay in house while curing. I would recommend this product to anyone!!!
I have been using Rustins Danish Oil, which I consider the best Danish oil in the world, for many years (unobtainable in the USA so have to source from a relative in the UK). Then I discovered Rubio Monocoat. The application, the finish, the feel, even the smell, is beyond wonderful. The ease of application saves hours on any typical project. The finish enhances the character of the wood beautifully without compromising the integrity or grain of the wood. So far I have used the "Pure" on Walnut, Black Cherry, Hard Maple and Ebony veneer and I doubt I will ever use Danish Oil again.
I wanted a slightly enhanced sheen to the finish so I was advised by Monocoat.us to apply the Universal Maintenance Oil over the Oil Plus 2C after it had cured. The result was nothing less than spectacular. Absolutely perfect. Not too glossy but a warm satin luster, again without compromising the grain pattern.
The support from the people at Monocoat.us in Georga is wonderful. Everyone I have spoken to have been extremely helpful, professional and knowledgeable of all their products. Their shipping is prompt and they are an absolute please to deal with.
I initially ordered 3 samples (black, ash grey and chocoloate), and while none of them were the color I ultimately chose, I felt confident that the Walnut would look like walnut. It went onto walnut veneer bench, shelves and mantle and looks PHENOMENAL! But if you're not applying it yourself, make sure the user reads the directions. This stuff behaves differently than the stain that a painter's used to. Rather, I got great advice from a furniture-making friend who uses it.
This is the 3rd time I am using Rubio Monocoat 2C and oil. I began using it in 2015 when there were very few people who had used it in the market. I choose it after searching online for a stain that had low or no VOC. After a long search and close reading I decided to buy Rubio Monocoat. My project was successful and I have never looked back! I love the products because I can stain my house and stay in it with less dangers of breathing harmful products. The sitting room floor I stained in June 2015 is still looking great and yet I have hardly done anything to maintain it. The only problem I have with Rubio Monocoat is that you cannot save it for later use. Once mixed it has a shelf life of 4-6 hours and yet it is costly.
This is a great product for all wood products. Pretty easy to apply. Finish last a long time.
This product is hands down the best and easiest thing to use. I was extremely impressed!
I'm very pleased with the results of this product. It goes on with minimal effort, it really brings out the character of the wood, and it smells great to boot! I've not used it before so I don't know how durable it is, but from what i've read it should last. The one thing I would suggest to a buyer is consider getting some syringes to measure for smaller projects. Pouring out of the cans is messy and wasteful, and with the cost of this stuff...
Oil plus 2c is super easy to apply. I am a cabinet and case goods maker and I expect this product to become an integral part of what I do.
This is the second time that I use this product in "pure (clear)". I already used it for my 1900 sq feet pine floors 3 years ago. I really like how easy it is to apply and how quickly you are able to walk on it.
On the downside, there are some stains that won't go away if you don't notice them immediately. The house is shoe free and that really helps keep it cleaner.
On a side note, I wasn't very careful when applying the product, I was barefoot and kneeling on the floor and I got a skin rash (which happened also 3 years ago when I used it but back then I had attributed it to something else... Now I know). My friend who was wearing shoes and using the buffer didn't have problem.
Thank you
I heard about Rubio Monocoat from a contractor acquaintance who uses it for hardwood flooring stain and finish. I was looking for a nice finish to use on a bed I made of Wormy Chestnut. An oil finish seemed better than a film build product such as lacquer on this beautiful wood. The matte finish and supple feel of the wood after using the Monocoat is exactly what I had envisioned plus it really brought out the warm color and grain definitions in the wood. Application was very simple and a little goes a long way especially in my experience. I used a rag to apply the oil rather than the squeegee method in an effort to avoid the oil pooling in the multitude of worm holes and running through to the other side. I’m concerned that the thirsty wood got enough oil to penetrate to give durability. However, it looks great! Now I’m concerned with the shelf life of the remaining product. Customer service at Rubio Monocoat informed me that the hardener (part B) could last from only a few weeks to a few months. The oil (part A) could last up to 6 months after being opened. I opened the oil the next day after using it and it had already formed a skin on top. The hardener is in a can that does not reseal well at all. In fact it was very difficult to open the first time because of overflow that had hardened around the lid. Horrible container for a product this expensive.
Overall I’m pleased with the product and will use again. Hopefully soon so I can use up the rest of what I have. The time and labor you save with this one coat system outweighs the cost.
I really like the finish results. I have used the product on 2 projects so far. A maple live edge dining table and a river coffee table. Love the texture of the finish smooth with the feel of wood, not a coated feeling. Use very small amount of the product to get coverage. Not able to comment on durability yet.
I just finished ~1000 SQFT of monocoat plus 2c on rough pine flooring milled in VT. We prepped the floors as prescribed with a vacuum and then Rubio cleaner. Then went about rolling and rubbing the oil into the wood...and then buffed out. It was pretty hard work, I’d say about 20 hours total. But it looks super cool and hopefully will be a legit long term solution. We have some pictures if interested. Oh, we used about 3.5 ltrs.
Monocoat products have changed our business. Over decades designing and building furniture, I've used dozens of finishing products and nothing compares to Monocoat. Application is simple and foolproof, requiring little training. And the results are outstanding. I could not be happier.
We started using this product about a year ago when we were looking for alternative matte finishes for an architectural millwork project we were asked to bid on. We provided several finish samples before the restaurant client settled on #21 Natural. The client couldn't be happier with our work and we were pumped to find this product with NO VOCs!! Easy to use, smells wonderful and the finish is outstanding. We are spreading the word, one project at a time.
Used the Chocolate color on my farmhouse table. Turned out beautiful! Very easy to use and got incredible results. So pleased with this product.
Great product! Beautiful, deep finish and pleasant scent. This is an amazing stain and I feel content knowing that it is not polluting my home. Instead of purchasing a closet system, my husband and I chose to make our own customized to our needs. The end results achieved using Monocoat Oil plus 2C have made us eager to take on another project. The Charcoal gave our project an unique, custom look. Customer service has also been very helpful in answering all my questions. Love this company and its products!
Just needed to finish a desktop that I had stripped and bleached. Wanted a natural looking finish that would withstand typical desktop use. I chose the oil plus 2c in 5 percent smoke. Had way too much (used the smallest quantity they offered) but the finish is really nice. Only wish there was more "smoke" in the final product. Maybe my wood didn't have enough tannin in it. Pretty nonetheless.
I have refinished floors the old fashion way varnish. Will never use that ever again. Monocoat is the best way to refinish floors hands down. We built a 4000 sq foot log home and we finished all the floors ourself. We installed unfinished ingrown bark hickory flooring and used clear/pure oil and everyone is in love with our floors. I tell everyone I know about Monocoat. :):)

the best stuff i found yet ! easy to work in a beautiful finish. and as far as repair, i can't even see the spot that i repaired two days after monocrat was applied. NO cutting corners on sanding, use a guide coat. my repair was in the sanding.top notch product.
Was going to refinish my floors with the usual poly finish... until I stumbled upon this product.... best decision ever! So happy with the finish - so natural and love not having that plastic coating over the floor. My husband had a hard time adjusting to the matte finish but he loves it now! I used the charcoal on red oak and it is stunning! Going to refinish my dining table and coffe table with monocoat also. The product is so easy to use.
I used the Oil Plus 2C to finish and seal the new butcher block counter tops in my kitchen. I looked at SO MANY products, reviews and suggestion...I could not be happier that I chose to go with this product that is environmentally friendly, easy to apply and clean up and that ENHANCES the beauty of the wood you are working with! I followed application instructions for prep (sanding & rubio wood cleaner) and then applied using a paint sponge and wiped off excess oil after about 5-10 minutes. I let the 3 sections of counter top cure for 7 days, but was worried that I had not applied enough Oil Plus 2C...so I emailed customer service and they suggested applying another coat - which I did after the counter tops were cut and put in place. The finish is AMAZING! The color sample for the cinnamon brown is spot on. I LOVE my new counter tops!
Honestly, I used it because of the color, indigo blue is exactly what I wanted and no other product could even come close. Mine is a renovation project, but with brand new white oak floors - white oak because the red oak shifted the blue oil to be a bit purple in the samples we made. Also, we did a water wash prep on the floor to raise/open the grain a bit so the finish is darker than the dry prep. The dry prep also pulled the yellow about of the wood and made the oil color shift to be a bit green. So be sure to do a few samples before committing to the entire floor if you’re as particular as I am (an architect doing my own place!). Next, be prepared for a VERY matte finish. It is truly beautiful, but shows a lot of dust/footprints, etc. The Monocoat cleaning products are great. Also, be prepared for the color to transfer to your socks for a while - this goes away after several moppings. (FYI, I had my floor completed and then protected while finishing the remainder of the interiors, about 4 months, so it’s not a function of curing time... All in all, I am sold and would recommend this product to anyone!! Just be sure you know the small hassles so you’re prepared to love it!
As a custom furniture and cabinetmaker, I've always preferred the depth and beauty of natural oil finishes but until recently had not found a product that protected wood as reliably as, say, catalyzed lacquer or varnish. Monocoat 2C has changed all that. Now there's a viable, non-toxic choice to protect wooden products while enhancing the beauty of wood grains and colors.
I Absolutely LOVE rubio monocoat oil + 2c!! I have all but completely switched to using it on my custom furniture pieces. The ease of application, fast handling and cure time, matte finish, and nature beauty it brings out make it second to none in my book for most projects.
Monocoat.us has exceptional customer service to boot!! And I mean EXCEPTIONAL.
This was such an ease to use. I just followed the instructions as they were listed and watched a few videos on youtube to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I refinished my 75 year old hardwood floors and they look beautiful. Thank you, Monocoat!
I’ve used this product for over 5 years and nothing compares.
So the monocoat has exceeded our expectations and we are looking forward to using it in the rest of the house.
Thanks again for the quick responses and straightforward answers to the questions I have had. It has taken the apprehension out of using a new product.
